Bibiru: The Panema Dog
The story follows Bibiru, a kaikuxi (dog) who becomes panema — unlucky in hunting — and Waranaré Wayana’s attempt to cure him so they can hunt together again. During an intense hunt, young people learn about the origins of ancestral dogs and the care required when hunting in their Amazon territory. Filmed by young Wayana and Apalai, first-time filmmakers from Bona village (Pará State, Brazil), the film offers Indigenous reflections on human and non-human relationships that challenge non-Indigenous perspectives on hunting.
This film is paired with The Forbidden Dogs, by Saeideh Akhkan.
